WALKING ON WATER is a an idea for a tiny home born from a need of creating an almost mythical experience of making a home float on water.
Using plastic, bamboo and steel we created an idea for a house that uses existing natural features to make affordable housing for fishermen in the Loktak Lake, Manipur.
Pumdi (floating islands of debris and decomposed plants) are the rings formed on the lake and are used by fishermen to make small homes with sheets of steel. In the project these Pumdis are used in to hold the columns which are floating on plastic drums. Drums when empty completely float on water and can be filled manually to lower the building into the water.
When floating higher the main entrance floor reaches down to the ship dock like a welcoming hand reaching down.
Recreational spaces are walls of the house that are flipped out of the building landing on additional drums on the water increasing available area.
Walking on water creates an incredibly adaptive and functional building making use of every movement provided by nature and need of people using it.
