BAMBOO WORKSHOP BALI–Creating form and space with Bamboo

The international bamboo workshop that took place in Bali in 2022 is examined in this article. Sanvaad  Architects and Chiko Wirahadi, Five pillar Organization led the workshop; the journey and the information I got from it inspired me in many ways, and the philosophy of bamboo sustainable analysis propelled to a new motivation and order.

Many people from different countries attended the workshop and introduced vivid ideas that were demonstrated through models by understanding structural analysis. The workshop was held for two weeks and was broken down into stages to understand the joinery detail with respect to everything from furniture to life-size structures.

International Bamboo Workshop

The workshop began on November 5 in Sun Sang Eco Village with an introduction to bamboo joinery and treatment. We learned about the many varieties of bamboo that were used for joinery and how to gather and select them from the bamboo forest ourselves, Yellow bamboo was utilised. My attention was drawn to the study of fluid design as a result of the introduction and detailing of the structure as well as the techniques presented for achieving fluid design or parametric models. The models were created, and we participated in a group model-building lesson that focused on the fluid structure and how it functions. The training was divided into three phases, which included joinery details, furniture, and a life-size group model. The class ended at 5 p.m., and then there was a tour of Bali every evening after that that explored Balinese culture as well as social attractions, housing typology, etc. People were escorted to a bamboo factory and given a fascinating tour about the bamboo treatment, which comprises bamboo treatment and water proofing. The work flow was completed concurrently by paralleling the three steps. Because bamboo is sweet and thermite is drawn to it, the bamboo was distilled in boric acid, which protects against thermite. This practise is based on the belief that bamboo becomes sour when exposed to boric acid.

We learned about bamboo roofing costs and supplies throughout the class, and we also built the roof ourselves, which gave us an exploded vision. With the aid of the carpenter, furniture was created, including 2 chairs with layered designs and bamboo for a smooth finish. After some time, we finished the life-size model, which provided us with a clearer idea of how the structural joinery works. The city tours that were performed daily made us aware of the culture and the traditional home typologies by using the family head’s body measurements in the planning and construction of the house. There were also several other activities that were held, as well as competitions that were given. As the days went by, the workshop came to an end on November 17 with a farewell party. The exposure was excellent, the value of the time spent was definitely appreciated, and it also opened up a variety of ideas and how to accomplish them, giving you the option of pursuing sustainability as well as computational design, both of which can be accomplished through sustainable analysis. A positive environment fosters vivid variations and teaches us about form, shape, and size through a variety of things as well as through culture, which forges a route and a vision. It always relies on the design, and new joinery details come into focus when a new design style is produced, thus the bamboo construction methods that were taught are innovative and in-order make it work one should know about the material.
