What Skills Can Help Architecture Students Succeed?

Architecture demands more than being good at drawing or having a strong sense of design. While these are certainly helpful, Apoorva highlighted the importance of design thinking, curiosity, creative problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical skills. These help architects look at a problem from different perspectives and find solutions.

Communication is equally important. Because architects rarely work alone, they need to learn how to communicate ideas clearly, work as part of a team, and manage people. Importance of BIM and VDC

Technology is changing almost every aspect of architecture and construction, and digital workflows are becoming an increasingly important part of the profession.

During the conversation, Apoorva spoke about Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). BIM enables different professionals to work with coordinated digital information, while VDC can help teams plan, coordinate, and manage complex projects more efficiently.

Although VDC is still an emerging concept in India, Apoorva believes its importance is likely to grow considerably over the coming decade. Large projects often involve architects, structural consultants, mechanical and HVAC teams, electrical consultants, clients, contractors, and many other stakeholders. Better digital coordination can help bring all these teams onto the same page.

Learning BIM tools such as Revit and gaining hands-on experience through internships can be a valuable starting point.

Projects that communicate a student's strengths and design approach effectively are preferred, as recruiters may not have the time to go through every page in detail.

As to when students should start building their portfolio, Apoorva says they can start refining their portfolios in the later stages of their course by identifying their strongest projects, improving the presentation, and making the design journey easy to understand.

Should You Choose Architecture After Class 12?

For students finishing Class 12 and wondering whether architecture is the right career for them, Apoorva's advice is simple: choose it because you genuinely enjoy it, not because you have an idealised picture of the profession.

An ideal architecture student is someone with an interest in design, spaces, people, creativity, and the built environment. To know if you are the right fit, start by speaking to people already working in the field. Talking to architects, planners, designers, and other professionals can help students understand the different career possibilities as well as the realities and demands of the profession.

Cities of the Future

The conversation also touched upon what cities might look like decades from now.

Apoorva shared an intriguing vision involving smart, movable housing pods, gravity-based transportation, less dependence on conventional roads, and greater integration of agricultural spaces.
